Noodle Soup For Breakfast Today

Today I pleased everyone in the house with a nice cellophane noodles in shoyu broth, so easy to make!

Fill a medium sized pot with 6 cups water, a few cut up and rinsed oyster (or any type) mushrooms, bring to a boil. Add small slivers of rutabega and chopped leeks, and a few pieces of corn cob (save the corn, it will go in with the noodles). Bring to a boil and simmer for five minutes. Add 2 packages of cellophane noodles (about 8oz. total, I get mine at an Asian grocer in Westboro), the corn from the cob, and 3 tablespoons of high quality soy sauce (Ohsawa Shoyu). Simmer for three minutes and serve, minus the cobs. Delightful!!

Water to Alkalinize Your Body

A friend of mine dropped by this morning to share some Kangen Water. She is using it with good results and thinking of selling systems (multi-level, it’s a Japanese system for hundreds to a couple thousand dollars) that separate water into an acidic run-off (which you can use as a cleaner, very clever!) and a basic (or alkaline) drinking water, and you can vary the pH somewhat.

My take is, yes, it can work for some people under some conditions, especially if they are overly acidic (most meat-eaters are), and although it’s expensive, it may be worth doing.

However, continuing to eat a poor diet (not all meat-eaters, but those who eat too much meat, low quality meat, or do not chew well, or do not also eat lots of grains and vegetables, or perhaps do not get enough exercise) will eventually lead to health problems, particularly if the crutch (in this case high-pH water) is not in place at all times.

Furthermore, it may cause animal suffering, environmental damage, and economic damage locally and globally.

A far better idea is to eat boiled whole grains and organic vegetables (watch out for nightshades, they are acid-forming), and use small bits of organic animal foods such as white meat fish, as well as sea vegetables, nuts and seeds, beans, etc. This is the diet that created human beings, and it’s the diet that will save us.

Finally, you may want to separate your drinking from your eating. When you do this, your body has a much easier time digesting, and is able to use the nutrients from your meals more easily.

How I Wake Up Every Morning

The beautiful serenity of a good night’s rest can be quickly shattered by an alarm clock or an uptight spouse.

I have taken many classes in meditation, yoga, d0-in, and have developed a morning routine that works well for me. Here’s what I normally do…

1) Open the shade and window, and breathe in deeply while gazing at the rising sun in my woodsy backyard (I am lucky)

2) Sit up straight and breathe, then give myself a masssage from my head and face to my neck, shoulders, arms and hands, to my shakras (7 altogether), to my legs and feet.

3) Then I do a frog stretch, and a table with extension, then give myself a footrub, while breathing consciously.

4) Then I do hip flexors, jump up and do exercises for my shoulders with rubber bands, as I do my 12 line affirmation that I keep on the dresser.

5) After putting on breakfast (usually miso soup and rice, sometimes with sauteed veggies), I go outside to get the newspaper, and do more breathing, stretching, a little more do-in, and walk either a few paces or a full :15 (if I have time and kitchen coverage). Otherwise I do a nice walk in the woods a little later

6) Finally, I do a body rub (read The Great Life Diet for a full description, http://www.skyboard.net/greatlife/) before my shower, which opens up the pores, gives attention to my body, and helps get rid of dead skin.

All of this takes less than :40, but keeps me happy and healthy and motivated.

What is your morning exercise routine?

A Typical Morning In The Kitchen

Our kids don’t always love it, but most mornings when we greet them in the kitch, it’s over a nice bowl of miso soup.

A large bowl for the parents, a small one for the kids, have a few sips and we’ll bring you some nice brown rice (and sauteed vegetables). Or, sometimes it’s barley, or millet, or oats, maybe even a melange of grains. We ask them to chew it well, and not to read while they eat, although my son is now addicted to reading the horoscopes and comics at some point in the am.

My wife usually adds a slice of steamed sourdough bread, with Earth Balance and tekka (a japanese condiment made from vegetables), or rice cheese. I would say that breakfast is a peaceful and nourishing event in our home, but it makes a great start for the day.

Does it sound Japanese? It is, really. We like it, but we love the results. Good health everyday, physical and emotional. We have things that bug us, but our bodies respond well.

Do we ever party? YES! Saturday my son had five friends over for a Super Smash Brothers (WII) competition, and we had chips and dips and homemade vegan cookies and brownies. It was a crazy good time. And guess what? Nobody is sick on Monday. What a revelation! Could even be a revolution if anyone is reading this.

Health Yourself By Cooking Balanced Vegan Meals

re you a good cook? Do you routinely cook at least one meal per day for yourself and/or your family? How often are these meals vegan? (that means no animal flesh, eggs, dairy or sugar, which is whitened with cow bones). If you don’t eat at least one home-cooked meal per day, and you don’t cook vegan meals at least half of the time, you are probably less healthy than you ought to be.

The Truth About Animal Foods in 2010
We can no longer eat animal foods on this planet and support the planet, nature, society and our health. If you saw how farm-raised fish reach your plate, or saw the life of a typical cow or pig or chicken in the USA, you would be sick to your stomach. Spend a few minutes on YouTube or with a good book (Fast Food Nation, Food, Inc., Meet Your Meat, Omnivore’s Dilemma, Skinny Bitch, The World Peace Diet, and so many more!!)

Perhaps you have high cholesterol, allergies, migraines, depression, or maybe you are so young active and carefree that you have not suffered yet. It’s time to wake up anyway, because every day in this country, 75 million animals are brutally murdered, so we can devastate ourselves and the planet by tossing them back without a thought of the cost. It’s time we knew.

I can help you cook plant-based meals that are BEAUTIFUL, yummy, affordable, fast, and will support a vibrant life without drugs and doctors.

If you already know how to do this, tell me something GREAT (send me a recipe, anecdote, idea or contact) so I can forward it!

Have a great day!!

Health Yourself! (at Piccadilly Pub?)

Last night, I took my friend Ron to Piccadilly Pub in Westboro. Although I am 98% vegan, I will sometimes take a bullet for my kids, or yield to a social situation (some things never enter my mouth, such as hot dogs, hamburgers, or fast food, I have my limits!)

Ron is handicapped since a car accident paralyzed his right side just about 20 years ago. He lives alone, like a packrat, on coupons, cows and corn syrup. Ah the oscar to my felix! So you can see why we dined there.

Anyway, although we never made it to the Firefighter’s Comedy Night in Westboro, we had a nice dinner, and I managed to have a reasonably cruelty-free, non-acid-forming dinner. Had I not ordered the GardenBurger™, I would have been out of luck, although the beer was excellent and good for me.

But my point is, it was a low-stress event, because I cared mostly about Ron being comfortable, and not making waves. Lisa our waitress was very nice, humoring Ron by conversing with him, and even letting us in on her private life a little. It showed me something that she had compassion for him.

I’m very concerned that (nearly) every single patron besides me was eating meat and dairy and salt and sugar and corn syrup and chemicals to the point where their bodies are in rough shape, and they need drugs to get through their days. Can it be that I am deceived and these people are just fine, and not worried about what they eat, so better off?

I know deep inside we can transform our health through:

1) Understanding the state of our eating and lifestyle

2) Making significant changes to improve our mood, health and energy, then choosing a diet and lifestyle to support our dreams

3) Living our dreams in a happier, cleaner, safer world

Come Home to Your True Nature

Just saw Will Tuttle speak (saw him once before) in Sudbury. Unbelievable guy, so inspirational.

Lived in a trailer for the past 10 years, with his artist wife, cris-crossing the country, speaking about his book, and playing music for people. I was not able to capture the mood in the room, but I did get a few thoughts…

According to Heifer, International, cows were created for 4 Ms…Meat, Milk, Manure and Money

Every day, 75 million animals are killed in the USA for food. Every time you vote with your dollars, you are either for or against this deception, dissociation, and reductionism of the meat-eating agenda.

We grow enough grain on this planet to feed 13 Billion people, but we choose to have 1B starve, so we can feed over 90% of the grain to animals, grain laced with petroleum, pesticides and their dead animal brethren, so we can eat them (or waste them) while we watch TV, chat with our friends, or drive in our cars.

A plant-based diet is what we were designed for, and what helps us run best.

Come home to your true nature, of protecting the planet and its beings, and showing mercy, love and compassion to all your fellow creatures, so that you may also be shown mercy, love and compassion.

Humans were not meant to capture, enslave, drug, maim, torture, rape,, murder, eat and waste cows, pigs, goats, turkeys, ducks, chickens and fish. And we didn’t mean for it to happen to us. But what goes around, comes around.

We can change it. We need to do it, one person at a time. We can save our planet, and save our animals from becoming extinct, and we can save ourselves, even eliminate war. But not until we realize that it all starts on our plates.

Be Vegan and be proud.

Will Tuttle is 57, he looks 40. He’s a gifted writer, teacher, entrepreneur, musician and spiritual activist. He’s been vegan for over 35 years. His book, The World Peace Diet, is amazing. It goes into a broad range of topics, transforming its readers.

Chew On This…

As I told the people at the Acton Networking group I spoke to this past Monday evening, chewing can make a dramatic difference in the digestion process, and yield results such as:

1) Weight Loss

2) Better Mood & Concentration

3) Lower Toxicity in your body

4) Higher Immunity

It works great for all foods, but is especially powerful when you chew boiled grains such as rice, millet, barley, corn, quinoa, amaranthe, spelt, etc. Your mouth is where grains (and other carbs) do most of their digesting, with the help of slightly alkaline saliva.

Sit up straight, lean forward just a bit, and chew 25 or more times with each biteful, thinking about how good it tastes, and how lucky we are to be eating when we are hungry.

Sounds crazy, but if everyone did just this, our health and happiness would increase. Try it!

Another Article

Today’s Boston Globe has a nice article (West, page 1) on my friend Vegan Victoria, and her group of MeetUp friends who are circling the area (this time in Northampton) and enjoying all the great food opportunities for vegetarians and vegans.

Why is the Globe bending over backwards to give so much attention to veganism and veggie choices these days?

I think it’s because that’s what more and more people want–a way to be satisfied with yummy and nutritious food that is good for the planet as well.

Why So Afraid Of Change?

Yesterday’s revelation (The Boston Globe, C3) that Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (retired NBA basketball great) has a form of Leukemia and at age 62 is undergoing treatment is no great surprise really. These guys are used to eating enormous amounts of animal foods that contain everything from hormones, to antibiotics, to gobs of pesticides (they smear it on cow’s bodies now, didn’t you know?) At least when an athlete is young, they are working out every day and can work off some of those toxins.

But what bothered me was the quote from his doctor, who said: “You have a very good chan ce to live your life out and not have to make any drastic changes to your lifestyle.” The article went on to say Abdul-Jabbar is taking an oral medication from Novartis.

People, cancer is a wakeup call that your body is being assaulted by poor eating and lifestyle choices. I enjoyed watching Kareem play for many years, so I wish I could tell him that being open to change is natural and important, especially as we age, and that he may indeed have to give up his beloved Thai food (he mentions this in the article too), at least in the short run.

We all need to look at our diet and lifestyle, to address our own conditions, as well as society as a whole. There is so much talk now about how animals are suffering so we can eat meat, how there are many toxins in farm-raised fish and all animal foods, due to the methods used, and how the water and air quality is dramatically worse because of our excessive animal protein diets.

Please, consider attending one of these events in the next few days if you can, and help us get the message:

1) Today, Wednesday, November 11, 2009, at Congregation Kehillath Israel, in Brookline MA, author Jonathan Safran Foer will read from his first nonfiction work, “Eating Animals.” Admission is $5. There was a mention of this in yesterday’s G (Page 3, Boston Globe) in which Foer is quoted: “This is the number one cause of global warming.”

2) This Thursday evening November 12, 2009 at UU Church in Lexington, MA and this Friday, November 13, 2009, at Temple B’nai Torah, Sudbury, MA, Will Tuttle PhD , author of the well known book “The World Peace Diet”,  is coming to explain the views expressed in his book.  He’ll be talking (and playing some of his original music because he’s also a composer)  from 1 to 3 PM.  Tuttle lectures around the country and gives a fascinating and inspirational talk with lots of new ideas to think about. Vegan Desserts will be served and the talk is free to the public.

3) The movie Food, Inc. is being played Wednesday, Novembber 18, at 7pm, at the Framingham Public Library, Costin Room. There will also be a discussion with various professors of food and nutrition. The film is  an insightful and eye-opening look at our nation’s food industry. In his documentary, Robert Kenner looks at the huge food conglomerates that mass-produce food, putting profit ahead of the health of the American consumer, the environment and the survival of the farmer. Peter Traves of Rolling Stone says: “Don’t take another bite till you see Food, Inc., an essential, indelible documentary.”Refreshments provided by
