Top 10 Ideas To Make Cookies & Ice Cream Healthier

Often, I hear stories of people who gave up the corporate world, to open an ice cream store or start baking cookies for a living. Sounds great, doesn’t it?

The world is full of ice cream and cookies, but we are still a sick and depressed bunch. Why? I think the ice cream and cookies are part of the problem.

Yes, we are stressed and need relief. But ice cream and cookies are short term relief, invented for children who need instant gratification. And their effects are well known:

  • Strep throat, tonsillitis, influenza
  • Colds, allergies, temper tantrums
  • Food poisoning, diarrhea, lymphoma
These afflictions are linked to the ingredients we use, such as:
  • Butter
  • Eggs
  • Sugar
  • Milk
  • Cream
  • Food Coloring
  • Preservatives
I don’t mean to be a killjoy. Certainly, eating cookies and ice cream can be fun. However, the way we do it, and the frequency we have cookies and ice cream are contributing. Here are my top 10 ideas to make cookies and ice cream healthier…
  1. Make treats dairy-free. Milk, cream, butter, half & half and cheese are arguably the most unhealthy foods. They also cause animal suffering and environmental problems. Almond milk, soy milk, rice milk, coconut milk, and earth balance, soy or corn oil work fine. When using chocolate, make sure sure the chocolate is dairy-free also. Trader Joe’s sells it.
  2. Make treats egg-free. Most eggs come from hens that are treated horribly. Living away from family, eggs stolen, days shortened, beaks cut off,  the life of a chicken is hell. We’ll come back to the horrors of eating chicken. Instead, use egg replacer, or soy flour, or tapioca.
  3. Instead of using sugar, why not use brown rice syrup, agave nectar, or grade B maple syrup? They give our pancreas a break, and taste just fine.
  4. Stay away from chemical stabilizers, colorings, flavorings and preservatives. They allow longer shelf life, but shouldn’t we be buying local products or making things ourselves anyway, to support local businesses, and reduce fossil fuel use?
  5. Make smaller batches, and have smaller sizes at stores and restaurants. Also, end the idea of a free dessert. It isn’t helping Friendly’s anyway.
  6. Don’t eat dessert every day. Make it 2-3 times per week. And then, ice cream and cookies can be once per week. There are many healthy desserts, such as fruit, jello, pudding, breads, etc.
  7. Don’t allow kids to have both cake and ice cream, AND a sugary drink at a party. Limit them. They’ll win, and you’ll win. And do the same with parties. One per weekend. Let them get some outside time. Pick and choose. Balance.
  8. When you know a party is coming up, have a healthy meal before and after. With brown rice, cooked vegetables and beans, and maybe even miso soup. The latter is especially good after eating bacteria-laded milk products.
  9. Try to have your cookies and ice cream earlier in the day, so exercise and a healthy meal can improve the blood chemistry.
  10. Have a pickle or umeboshi plum after cookies or ice cream.

Learn How To Be More Successful (and Save Your Life)

About 5% of the American population eats a plant-based diet (aka is vegan). Research is converging on the notion that eating more animal foods leads to more disease. Animal food production has also devastated our oceans, waterways, land, air and rain forests.

Some are 100%, which is difficult given the proclivity for manufacturers (food, clothing, medicine, cosmetics, etc.) to use animal products. Some are 90% (that’s where I am), either because they are doing it for health reasons, or they admit having vices, etc.

Research shows that both of these groups live longer, and healthier lives. I believe this is a measure of success. Heck, being dead or sucking up medical resources and care and sympathy from everyone is no fun at all.

Interestingly, while the ratio of meat-eaters to vegans is about 20:1, good karma and better intuition of those on a plant-based diet seems to help vegans avoid accidental and violent death at a much higher rate. One more reason to switch.

If all four beatles are (were) vegan, and Madonna, Ellen, Bill Clinton, even Ozzy Osbourne are vegan, you can be vegan too. You just need to learn how.

Where Are The Acorns This Year?

Do you remember last autumn? There were 50% more acorns than the previous year, it was insane. And we all know what happened to the squirrel population, it’s exploded, to the point that there is a flat one on nearly every road, and climbing every tree.

This year, things will be different. No acorns may mean a lot of squirrels don’t make it over the winter. The ones that do will be very strong though, perhaps be able to wrestle you to the ground!

The point of all this is that nature has a way of getting back to balance, and the more we go towards eating chemicals and animals, using up fossil fuels and taking medicines and drugs to keep going, the faster we’ll see a revolutionary change coming from nature.

Are You Happy?

I am happy. I have very important things of health, enough money to eat and have shelter, and a beautiful wife and two amazing children.

My body feels great most of the time, and at 47, I know a lot of other people that cannot say the same.

Sadly, capitalism or our way of life keeps us so busy, many of us don’t have time to take care of our body, or appreciate the goodness in our lives.

My gift to you is to remind you that breathing, nature, gratefulness, and giving is what makes us human, and makes us happy.

Graduate From Difficulty to Easy Street

Being busy is a gift. Enjoy what you do and you are free, regardless of your income or fame.

Getting sick makes life difficult. People don’t realize this until it happens to them or to a loved one.

But here’s the interesting part. Sickness is avoidable! According to doctors, the government, nutrition experts and many well known stars, a well-balanced vegan diet will prevent almost any illness, from osteoporosis, to heart disease, to cancer to Alzheimer’s.

Also: food poisoning! My son came home from a party and told us his friend had a bunch of donuts at the party and is now sick, and my son had one donut, and was worried. However, his friend also had at least one hamburger at the party, and my son did not. Problem solved.

If you eat hamburgers and hotdogs, milk and cheese, and other crap food, sooner or later you will get sick. Then life will become more difficult.

5 Easy Food Replacements For Better Health

Even though I enjoy health foods, and know a fair amount about health and wellness, I still enjoy rich foods, and with a wife and two kids here in the Framingham area, there are many temptations. But, there are some places I will not go.

However, there are a lot of healthier “replacements” that are many times just as good, or very close. Eliminating meat, dairy and eggs in not only better for health, but also less expensive, reduces animal suffering, and helps the environment.

  1. Breakfast: Tofu Scramble with almond cheese, mushrooms, onions, peppers and turmeric
  2. Lunch: Tempeh Mock Tuna Salad

Healthy Living In Greater Boston

All in all, the Boston area has some good resources for healthy living. Have you been to:

  • Tower Hill Botanic Garden in Worcester?
  • Masao’s Kitchen in Waltham?
  • Whole Foods in Dedham, or the new store in Wellesley?
  • Veggie Galaxy in Central Square, Cambridge?

Have you been to your local CSA?

While there are TONS of opportunities to eat badly (fast food, pizza joints, even restaurant chain food has way too much fat, chemicals, sodium and sugar), there are more and more resources for good food.

And the Autumn nature is all around us. If you want to take a beautiful walk, here are a few great spots:

  • Tipling Rock, Nobscot Reservation, Sudbury
  • Spy Pond, and adjoining bike trails, Arlington
  • Fresh Pond, Cambridge (near Alewife)
  • Blue Hills, Canton (and nearby Hale Reservation)

One final point: you can think happy thoughts, and peaceful thoughts, wherever you are. I’ll see you there!

Worried About Radiation From Your Smart Phone?

Technology has a cost. Medications, bug sprays, fireproofing products such as asbestos, even automobiles have caused immeasurable suffering in terms of illness, death and loss of productivity.

These days people are talking about nuclear radiation again, due to the fallout in Japan and impending problems in New Hampshire and elsewhere, but there are other hidden dangers.

Your cell phone gives off strong radiation from the wireless signals it sends and receives. Over the course of 50 years, perhaps a quarter of us will develop brain cancer from it. Those of us who don’t use them often, or who only started using them after age 40 have a clear advantage. But what about our children?

There are products that can minimize the damage. My family is using them, and I encourage you to get one also. In fact, I can provide you with one that sells for about $100 in Europe, for $90 delivered.

How to Lower Health Insurance Costs

Have you seen this graphic in yesterday’s Boston Globe?

It’s nothing new that health insurance costs are rising at 10-15% per year. What is new is that our economy is practically dead because of it.

What can employers do? What can you do?

Here is my top 10 list:

10 Ways to Lower Health Insurance Premiums

  1. Become mostly vegan (eat very little meat, eggs and dairy) and eat brown rice most every day
  2. Choose organic when it comes to animal foods, greens, apples and berries
  3. Exercise more, especially walking, biking and swimming
  4. Do a daily body rub, to exfoliate, improve circulation, life your mood and detox
  5. Consume fewer chemicals in the form of foods, medicines and body products
  6. Get more clean air and water at home and at work through filtering, plants and open windows
  7. Take up yoga, meditation, self-massage, affirmations, journal writing and hobbies
  8. Read A New Earth by Eckhart Tolle, The World Peace Diet by Will Tuttle & Health Yourself by David Kagan
  9. Heal your emotional wounds through counseling, reading, courses, etc.
  10. Have colon hydrotherapy and/or do a liver cleanse

Once these are done, you will most likely be much healthier. You can then lower your life insurance and health insurance plans, as you will not need them as much or as soon.
