Easing Pancreas Issues

We humans don’t live forever. But living a long, healthy and full life is a worthwhile goal, no?

I keep hearing of people who get pancreatic cancer, and then die within a few months or years. It seems that modern medicine does not have a good answer for that one.

Your doctor doesn’t know the first thing about preventing cancer, except to tell you to eat better, not be obese, and come in for checkups. Unacceptable.

A basic understanding of the human body, what the pancreas does, and yin and yang can help. The pancreas helps us digest sugar, which is very important for us to do our work, and remain healthy. Unfortunately, much of the sugar we ingest nowadays is simple sugar, which damages our body, and gives us only short boosts of energy.

The pancreas is a compact organ deep in the body. Therefore, the yang energy that we ingest, through food or ideas, tends to end up there. If we are not able to use moderation, the inner organs such as the pancreas (and liver, kidneys, testicals, ovaries and colon) can become cancerous.

In general, you want to reduce pressure in your life. Here are some things you can do to prevent pancreatic cancer.

Top 10 Ways to Avoid Pancreatic Cancer

  1. Stop smoking
  2. Avoid barbecued, broiled and grilled meats
  3. Reduce stress through meditation, yoga or tai chi every week
  4. Switch over to sea salt/use sea veggies vs. salting at the table
  5. Get a massage or do self-massage twice per year
  6. Eliminate hard-cooked eggs, cheese and chicken from your diet
  7. Do a daily body rub
  8. Avoid white flour, sugar, crackers, croutons and hard pretzels
  9. Spend less time with computers, cell phones, microwaves, etc.
  10. Eat more well-cooked organic vegetables and fruits
Three things to look for when asking yourself if pancreatic cancer is in your future:
  • Do you have a horizontal line at the top of your nose? Patrick Swayze did.
  • Do you typically boss people around and become inflexible when stressed? Steve Jobs did.
  • When you press the tip of your index finger into the center of your opposite palm, is it very hard, or soft and giving? It should be soft.

Oil Crisis and Healthcare Crisis Related!

Who do you know that “cannot eat fried food?”

In the old days, we enjoyed fried clams, onion rings, chicken, french fries, fried dough etc. with only minor issues.

Now, we get diarrhea just thinking about it. Why is that? Many reasons really, from portion size, to lack of fiber, to poor chewing. But it’s also the oil. Years ago, vegetable oil made from corn or soybeans, or lard were used. Not the best, but in moderation, the body can handle it.

Now, almost universally, canola oil is used. Canola oil was invented in the 70s, and is now derived from rapeseed and/or two other genetically modified plants. There are questions as to whether it is fit for humans (like high fructose corn syrup, msg, nitrites, table salt and food colorings), but here are three interesting facts about it:

  1. It can be used to power diesel engines, in new or waste form
  2. It’s very cheap
  3. It becomes even cheaper if you leave it in the fryolater all day

While it’s almost certainly true that portion sizes and appetites have become gargantuan, it is equally horrifying that we are consuming foods made in a laboratory, made from plants that are genetically modified, and in large amounts.

We like to blame others for our problems (eg. the Chinese for lead in our toys, and the U.S. Gov’t for the fiscal crisis), but we like cheap, satisfying food in big portions.

The cure is not a pill, nor eliminating fried foods, but rather patronizing establishments that use healthier oils, and cooking with healthier oils at home.

The healthiest oils are:

  1. Olive oil (extra virgin when eaten raw, and regular when cooked at low to medium heat for short periods)
  2. Sesame oil (toasted when eaten raw and cooked a low to medium heat, and regular when cooked at low/medium/high heat
  3. Sunflower or Safflower oil when cooked at low/medium/high heat
  4. Soybean oil when eaten raw, and when cooked at low to medium heat
  5. Corn oil when eaten raw, and when cooked at low to medium heat

Please use organic oils when you can, and use less oil in the winter, and cook it more. (oil is yin and our need and capacity for yin is less in the winter).

Also remember to eat a sea salt pickle (no vinegar, sugar, corn syrup or artificial colors) afterwards.

Happiness Is Healthful

Today I’ve had some nice interactions with people.

First, I went to my new bank, TD Bank. This company knows how to do things right. No waiting, friendly tellers, beautiful buildings, and even a dog dish filled with water for guests!

Then I went to the post office, where I was greeted with a smile. Can you believe it?

I think people are happy because the Pats won, and possibly because it’s 2012, and we are optimistic. Whatever the cause, it’s healthy for all of us. The happier we are all day, the fewer medical problems we’ll have.

If you want to take this further, try laughing and singing, at least in the shower and the car. The healing power of smiling, laughing and singing are well documented.

Beats eating brown rice and miso soup every night!!

Pickles! Pickles! Pickles!

Went to Zaftig’s in Framingham for the first time on Sunday evening, with my wife.

I grew up in a Jewish family, so delicatessen food appeals to me. Nowadays, however, I choose not to eat certain foods, especially in the massive quantities we see in a typical deli.

Zaftig’s is very nice inside, and the wait-staff is very friendly and accommodating, which makes it somewhat atypical for a deli. The decor is updated, but with old-time bar stools to remind me of the good old days, when Bailey’s Ice Cream was a destination.

And the food looks MARVELOUS. As it turns out, much of it is really fresh and delicious.

We had a bunch of sides; Steamed Broccoli was not overcooked or with too much seasoning. The potato pancake was very fat, with lots of fluffiness inside, but not too oily. The salmon cake was delicious, mostly made of fish. And the half sour pickle was perfect!

Watch out for store-bought pickles. Avoid table salt, sugar, corn syrup, vinegar, msg, preservatives, and food coloring. Here’s my recipe for half sour pickles.

  • 2 large pickling cucumbers
  • 1/2 small daikon radish (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon sea salt (I use course Celtic sea salt)
  • 1 TS fresh dill
  • black pepper, mustard seed, sea weed shake and garlic to taste
  • 2 cups spring water

Slice ends off washed cucumbers, and slice longways in half. Same for daikon then make slices in shape of half moons. Daikon is very good for blood quality and digesting animal protein. Some people soak them in cold water for :30.

Place vegetables into a vegenaise jar

Boil the water and spices, then shut off and cover for one minute to cool below boiling point. Pour into jar, fully submerging veggies and to the top. Then seal and leave on counter for several hours. Place into fridge. They will be edible in six hours, and perfect in 1-2 days. Leave them two more days for full sour pickles.

Your Ticket To Better Health In 2012

This time of the year is great for taking inventory. How is your health? Relationships? Happiness?

Some say 2012 is the last year for humans on this planet. I say something big is coming which will change life here, and we need to do some work to get ready. Improving our health is a great start.

Top 5 Ways to Improve Your Health

  1. Eat more boiled grains, organic vegetables and sea vegetables, and improve your chewing
  2. Reduce intake of animal protein, chemicals, sugar and alcohol, and don’t overeat or eat late
  3. Take a :30 walk outside every day, put more plants in your home, and avoid paint and gas/diesel fumes
  4. Do a body rub every day, and give yourself weekly self-massage
  5. Be grateful and do more laughing, singing, writing, cooking, and giving to others

If you do all five to a B+ degree, you will notice BIG changes within three weeks, and your life will significantly improve within three months.

Here are a few things that may be helpful:

  • Read: The Kind Diet, T. Great Life Diet, T. World Peace Diet, T. China Study, A New Earth, Health Yourself
  • Beware: While detoxing, you may discharge past items such as dairy, hair colorings, even bananas which can lead to headaches, skin eruptions, and nasal symptoms, etc.
  • Habits: It takes time to improve habits. When you screw up, forgive yourself and try again
  • Restaurants: Avoid eating out except 1-2 times per week. Cook with leftovers to take to work
  • Support: I am happy to support you with my eBook, iPhone app or a consult

Good luck!!

One Body, One Life, One World

I’m at the mall, in the Apple Store. Very happening place. Technology is really great, but we are all overloaded by it by the end of the day. Gifts etc. are nice too!

But today is a beautiful sunny day, 60 degrees, and all I want to do is take a nice walk and perhaps lay down on the grass to connect with nature.

When I lie down and connect to the earth, see the trees, and the sky, and relax, I know I am together with all living things, my sister, and everything is okay. Sometimes, I really need that.

What do you need?

Aging Gracefully

Yesterday I had an amazing birthday. The day was filled with support, love and gifts from friends and family. I also had a chance to learn some new things, and serve others, as well as enjoy wonderful food. Thank you to all.

Today I am thinking about how I can stay young, and what that means. Of course, the first thing that comes to mind is minimizing wrinkles and gray hair, and I’m pretty active there, eating a lot of fresh plant-based foods, and less animal protein, sugar and dried foods, as well as avoiding chemicals. I also get plenty of time in nature, and lots of exercise, and do body rubs and get the occasional massage or ginger compress, even chiropractic or acupuncture if I feel I need it.

But I want to focus on keeping an open mind, and staying up on new ideas, to remain relevant. I see my older relatives, such as my father and uncle aging, and while I feel they’ve done a good job providing for themselves and their families, and doing things they love, they are a bit out of the loop when it comes to new ideas, both healthy and otherwise. Certainly, many new ideas can be dangerous, or at least hard to understand. Texting, radiated foods, and “preventive” medicines come to mind.

While doctors may be trusted to administer the latter to trusting souls, many people feel the world is passing them by once they reach a certain age. This lack of energy or closed mind to even consider new ideas can dampen our chances for higher longevity, and greater wealth and happiness. Certainly, at a point, we want to minimize risk, and live off our savings so to speak, but what happens we we are faced with a crisis? We then rely on our children I suppose, but we are used to controlling our own destiny, so that becomes a very stressful time.

So how can you and I age gracefully, and either retain the ability to assess new ideas, or train our children or other caretakers to work with us for better results, as the problems become bigger and we reach the end of our days?

Certainly, the same principles apply here as in the physical aging game: eating and living more naturally, paying attention to our bodies, and continuing to learn as we go on. But don’t we also need to develop a practice, to become open to the next phase? This may include meeting with our children and caretakers, explaining our needs and our fears, and asking for help to stay up on the technology of living, even as we continue to challenge ourselves to do it alone.

The holidays are a busy time, probably not an ideal time to have these discussions. But don’t let too much time go by, before you consider how you can be of service to your older relatives, or how your children might help you stay relevant, and age gracefully. Sure beats being alone and lonely.
