Getting Back On Track

One of the reasons I love to study change is that it seems to be ever-present in my life. Yesterday I got a new car, last month I got a new job, and next month will be the one-year anniversary of my sister’s passing.

As changes happen, and we grow older, we notice changes in our body also. Sometimes we can heal our issues with diet and lifestyle changes, particularly if we don’t go to the doctor right away, and get a medicine to cover up the changes, or a test with a negative result and a pat on the back that we are “average.”

One idea is to eat “perfectly” for a few days, and take a yoga class, take a day off from work, and meditate, or perhaps get a massage or a chiropractic adjustment. It may take a little more time and funds than a quick trip to the doctor, but it’s often much more effective, and it can show you what’s possible. If you are interested in a one-hour consultation to assist in your healing, please call me today at 508.333.4153. I have lots of ideas, resources, recipes, an iphone app, eBook, and offer cooking classes and corporate lectures. Here’s what some of my clients have said. Enjoy the ride!!

Top 10 Healing Methods To Try

I’m not a wellness coach/authority/guru because it comes naturally to me. It’s because health has always been a challenge for me. I suspect it’s the same way with a lot of people. A weakness becomes a strength.

I will always be searching for ways to work on my liver, my emotional weaknesses, and my willpower.

In the last year or so, I’ve experienced a lot of inexpensive, natural, and effective methods for healing. Here are just a few:

  1. Shiatsu
  2. Reflexology
  3. Craniosacral Therapy
  4. Network Chiropractic
  5. Homeopathy
  6. EFT (tapping)
  7. Hypnotherapy
  8. Positive Psychology
  9. Alphabiotics
  10. Juicing

One Big Health Secret

You’ve read my rants about food. You know I believe it’s big in creating health. But there are so many other things you can do everyday that are separate from food.

Here’s a big one. This morning, I took a three mile walk in nature, with a good friend. We walked to the water’s edge, and talked about our projects and our families and our frustrations, before the traffic, finishing at 6:45am.

Do you walk outside every day for at least :15 to :30? It does not need to be a fast walk, just a chance to better digest your previous meal and your life on this new day. A chance to see the beauty and wisdom and nature, and appreciate life.

Next entry…another singular idea for health. Enjoy!!

The Marathon Of Life

Today is wonderful…sunny, quiet, nature is on the move for Spring, and people are excited about the Marathon, the Bruins, and having a relaxing weekend. I already got some things done for today, so I can relax with my family.

Life is long. I feel like I’ve lived several lifetimes and I’m only 47. I cannot remember much from when I was three or five, and that’s a good thing. But I appreciate every day now.

My secrets to enjoying a long and happy life have come fairly recently, and at a high price. But I think for some people, we must learn this way. If you are looking for a bit more health, longevity, and satisfaction, try these activities, and feel free to comment or to ask for support.

  1. Cook and eat boiled grains 5-7 times per week. Today I’m cooking medium grain brown rice that I soaked overnight. Add a pinch of sea salt, use a ratio of 2:1, and boil covered for :45. What could be easier?
  2. Chew rice well, and add steamed or sauteed organic vegetables, steering clear of nightshade vegetables. Also use legumes, beans, mushrooms, nuts, seeds, and a bit of fermented foods such as miso and pickles.
  3. Improve circulation with a body rub, massage, yoga, walking and occasional holistic treatments.
  4. Keep lots of plants in your home, and spend time outdoors.
  5. Be grateful for what you have, smile, laugh and sing, and listen deeply to others.
  6. Get a good night’s sleep.
  7. Be generous. It comes back to you.
  8. Spend time with family.
  9. Create things and add value.
  10. Be gentle on others and the planet.

Thanks For Keeping It Real

The other day I posted my annoyances with this world, and a comment came in which was dead on—depressing to read, but I needed to hear it. So thanks.

We all need to live in the real world which is more about competition than cooperation. Doesn’t mean we cannot choose healthier and gentler options when we want.

Here are a few resources for you to use when you want to ease up, green up, and heal…

What Annoys Me The Most

Sometimes we Americans are so galling.

Top 10 Annoyances With Americans

  1. Labeling diseases as “incurable” instead of making doctors learn about healing
  2. The idea that an economy must grow or it will die
  3. The notion that we know better than nature how to grow crops or solve problems
  4. Why celebrate birthdays of entertainers when teachers and nurses and social workers deserve it more?
  5. How come nobody talks about fixing the food system and stopping chemicals that endanger us?
  6. Our current tax system is ludicrous. When do we simplify it and hold wealthy Americans accountable?
  7. Why are we so greedy and materialistic? Do we know you can’t take it with you?
  8. I don’t understand why saying “fuck” in a song is so bad, but killing someone in a movie is okay
  9. Why is everyone eating so much sugar and taking so many drugs these days? Stressed much?
  10. Why to we back losers, like the post office, GM, Banks and our education system? Let change happen!

A Better Way to Heal

Most of us pay huge medical premiums every month. It’s a growing problem, and one that has stunted business growth in this most recent recession.

When we do get sick, our philosophy is often, “Good, now I can reap some benefit from all that expense.”

Unfortunately, many trips to the doctor do not add value. Yes, the condition may subside, either through a drug to cover a symptom, or a virus that runs its course. But the true cost of taking medications, and passing the buck on our health is becoming more evident daily.

There are dozens of articles from the past few years, pointing out that medical errors, whether diagnosis, drug interactions or overdoses, and even surgical mis-steps, have led to hundreds of thousands of deaths, each year.

Worst of all, when we are diagnosed with a life-threatening condition, we feel we have no alternative but to submit to the medical system. I don’t like it, and more and more of us are opting out, and choosing an alternative approach to healing, namely “diet and lifestyle change.”

The numbers back this approach. Think about it—lung cancer, pancreatic cancer, even breast cancer, result in huge expenses, added stress, and dangerous treatments that only buy a small percentage of patients, a few more years. The rest of us die quickly, and our families are so grateful to the doctors for doing everything they can, that they often ask for money to support the system or nonprofit that failed them.

Why do that? Why not realize that disease is caused by unnatural eating, unnatural living, and stress?

Why not gradually learn how to take better care of your body, and stop subjecting yourself to a life that makes you sick? This approach, including Macrobiotics, a plant-based diet, Eastern healing methods, and organic living, works for more and more people. There are several bouses:

  1. It’s much less expensive
  2. It’s easier on the environment
  3. It reduces animal suffering
  4. It provides a learning about nature that is wonderful
  5. It leads to more clarity of life’s purpose
  6. It promotes nature for the rest of the family and society
  7. It allows understanding of how to heal future health problems
  8. It promotes peace

We all go natural sooner or later. Why not sooner?

Does The World Work?

Sometimes it seems that everything is broken.

In my world, it’s the little things that get me. The kids up the street don’t show up on time to walk with my daughter (so I get to walk her, that’s good), the street sweeper is preceded by the leaf-blower who is spewing gas fumes on kids walking to school, people have not signed up for my cooking class and it may be cancelled, and now my men’s group has scheduled a competing event.

But I realize it’s the judgement around these random or perfect events that gets me down. I need to work on clearing out the negativity, and welcoming whatever comes, as a gift, or an opportunity to connect with someone to make things better.

Sometimes it’s as simple as my diet. Too many pickles, too much bread, some late eating, and I’m feeling stuck with no energy flow. Combine that with some uncertainty, and you get a potential downward spiral. But the keys may be to identify it, choose it, work on it, ask for help on it, and breathe through it.

That’s my day. You enjoy yours.

How Natural Are You?

Nature keeps us healthy and happy, and by being natural we help preserve nature, and reduce suffering.

Here’s a little quiz to see how natural you are.

1. How many hours per day do you spend outdoors (think of the last 30 days=Spring!)

  • a. Less than 1 hour
  • b. 1-4 hours
  • c. 4-8 hours
  • d. More than 8 hours

2. How often do you eat a boiled grain? (rice, quinoa, oatmeal, couscous, millet, etc.)

  • a. Less than once daily
  • b. 1-2 times per day
  • c. More than 2 times per day

3. How often do you eat animal foods (meat, eggs, or dairy)

  • a. More than 2 times per day
  • b. 1-2 times per day
  • c. Less than 1 times per day

4. How often do you meditate, do yoga, do self-massage or walk for thirty minutes?

  • a. Less than once per week
  • b. 1-2 times per week
  • c. More than 2 times per week

5. How often do you take medications?

  • a. Every day
  • b. Every week
  • c. Less than every week

6. Which best describes your exposure to chemicals?

  • a. We live a conventional life
  • b. We occasionally buy organic foods, clothing, natural cosmetics and cleansers
  • c. We mostly consume organic foods, clothing, natural cosmetics and cleansers

Give yourself a point for every b answer, and two points for every c answer.

If your score is 8-12, you are quite natural! Continuous improvement will yield dividends, but you should be very proud of your extra effort, and it’s most probably paying off.

If your score is 4-7, you are somewhat natural. Keep moving in a positive direction, and you will see significant improvements in your health, results and outlook.

If your score is 3 or less, you are the typical American. If you are happy with your life, that’s fine. But if you want more health, results and happiness, please consider making changes.

Big Year For Nature

I’m very excited, because this seems to be the big year for change that is a long time in the making, and desperately needed.

The world is overrun by human beings, and in many areas, we are decimating nature. The oceans, the rain forests, the land and the air is being polluted so terribly, it’s almost laughable. Fracking, underwater nuclear tests, sweeping fishing nets and eating meat daily are taking a toll, not only on our present conditions, but our future.

This is the year many of us will make big changes, to our diet and our lifestyle. We’ll benefit by improved health, a clearer conscience, and a slow but steady comeback of nature.

Yay for us!!
