Late Summer Eating Ideas

Okay, so you’ve been eating a bit better than the Standard American Diet, but still overeating, and indulging in such foods as frozen yogurt, chocolate, fruit juices, raw salads, etc. during the summer, in order to have fun and keep cool. That’s okay.

But now it’s late summer, and we need to shift our eating for the cooler weather. Time to dial down the raw salads, fruit and fruit juice (other than cooked and dried fruits), and especially the cold foods. More sea vegetables (dry Arama aka sea palm, it’s very good this time of year–email me or comment here for a recipe!), millet and well cooked land vegetables are in order, such as onions, sweet potato, squash, cauliflower and kale.

This will get you ready for fall, without too many colds and flu, etc., and nurture your spleen and pancreas, preventing issues with menstruation and diabetes.

Pancreatic Cancer, Medical System vs. Macrobiotics

Pancreatic cancer is a bummer. Here are some of the people we’ve lost that way:

  • Steve Jobs
  • Randy Pausch
  • Patrick Swayze
  • Michael Landon

Did you know that once someone is diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, their one-year survival rate is:

  • 10% with conventional medicine
  • 52% on a Macrobiotic diet

Some ideas:

  1. Two servings of whole grains
  2. Reduce salt, baked foods, chicken, eggs and cheese
  3. Relax through meditation, nature walks and pets
  4. Avoid harmful chemicals in food and at home/work

Desperation Leads to Inspiration

“Every now and then we all get desperate.” I learned that from Peter Wolf, lead singer of the J. Geils Band.

Now, of course, that band is playing with out guitarist and co-founder J. Geils himself, due to a contractual issue. We all have issues that pop up, and the key is how deal with them. The fellow from San Diego who became infamous in Aurora CO did not deal with his problems adequately. Perhaps you and I are more diligent, or lucky.

I had a two-year downward spiral starting with unemployment, leading to a separation, and caused a lot of pain for myself and my family. I have worked and am working on my issues every day: being grateful for my parents, my spouse, my kids, my friends, my health, my skills and everything I have in my life. Perhaps we all have that issue at some point in our lives.

Yesterday I finally got that I need to stop eating at night, and avoid desserts for a while, and also work on more breathing and exercising, to reduce my stress. Today, I am having a marvelous day and spending a lot of time thinking about how lucky I am and how improved health is coming my way. And it’s working.

I tried to share this idea with my son, and I believe he did hear the message this morning, but since it did not completely relieve his suffering when I said it (it takes work and patience, and he is 16 and that may be more than he is capable of right now), it had little effect on him and he had little positive feedback for me.

But I know, the key is to stay positive. Both for me in my life, and for me in regards to my son. And his work is his work, I should not worry too much about it.

What are your issues? Are you working and being patient? How’s it going? Could you use some support?

If you like this post, please comment. We would all love to hear what’s going on for you right now.

Summer Meals to Stay Cool and Lose Weight

The other day, I saw a young couple walk into Tennessee’s (BBQ) for lunch on a 90+ degree day. I do not know what they ordered, but all I could think was that I would never be attracted to that kind of food in summer.

What have you been eating this summer? Has it kept you slim, young, energetic, sweet-smelling, and happy?

Here’s what I’ve been eating:

  1. Barley Salad
  2. Polenta Cakes w/ Shiitakes and Scallions
  3. Fried onions and sweet potatoes
  4. Grilled Tofu
  5. Light Miso Broth w/ Pea Shoots
  6. Hummus Rollups w/ Cole Slaw
  7. Raw Salad w/ Nuts (almonds and pumpkin seeds)
  8. Veggie Burgers w/ Avocado
  9. Cool Bancha Twig Tea w/ Milk Thistle
  10. Green Apples, Melon, Tangerines, Plums & Apricots
Okay, I’ve had some frozen yogurt and chocolate, but in moderation.
Notice the absence of barbecued meats, eggs, cheese, tomatoes, peppers, etc.
Try out some of these foods, and notice how you feel after eating them. For recipes, send a comment below. Enjoy!!

See Your Life Differently, Success Awaits You

We are the ones who limit our success. It’s easy to blame kids, ex-wives, parents, bosses, the government, etc., but really it’s us.

My Dad told me this long ago, but I rejected it because I was young and foolish. He may not have been perfect, or always present, but he was right about many things.

I would like to help you find more success in life, especially in strengthening your health. Not only have I done this in my own life, but I’ve helped over 100 others improve their condition through diet and lifestyle habits.

If you are open to that, contact me at 508.333.4153 or david@kagan.co

We can work in person, over the phone, or I can get you my eBook or iPhone app, and steer you to appropriate experts, healers and resources.

Enjoy this beautiful day.

Join Us For A Healthy Dinner

On July 12 in Natick we are having dinner at Moe’s Southwest Grill. It’s inexpensive, easy to get to, and reasonably healthy.

In the meantime, be good to yourself:

  1. Eat light in Summer: more raw veggies, less animal foods, hard and salty foods
  2. Get outside early or late in the day, remembering to replenish minerals (sea veggies cooked in water, and drinking water) when you sweat
  3. Choose this life, and give your full presence to others

Enjoy!

Eczema

What a pain in the butt, right?

Really, it’s a gift. A wakeup call that our intestines, heart, liver, lungs, etc. may be hurting.

My eczema occurred after having a bunch of white flour baked treats from Au Bon Pain, over the course of several weeks. After ignoring it for a time, I’m now listening.

It happened on my three interior right hand fingers, with pimply breakouts then rough and broken skin. After watching my diet carefully, especially cutting back on sugar and chocolate and raw fruit (I have kids at home!), it got much better. A little stress, some alcohol and fruit salad and frozen yogurt, and boom, back again.

So now I’m being really good. Brown rice and veggies, miso soup and beans, and no sweets. In a week I’ll be rid of this mess.

One tip–use aloe to soothe and heal. It really works.

Aloe For Burns and Skin Problems

I love Aloe. Not to drink it mind you (some people do–horrifying stuff!), but on the skin.

Have you ever used it on a burn or a breakout, etc.?

It saved me one time on my honeymoon, after I burned the tops of my feet in St. Thomas.

Keep a plant in your home, they are very easy to care for. And when you need it, just snip an arm off, or even part of one, and slice until you can reach the ooze. Then apply liberally. Sometimes it can have a slight yellow color, so be careful to not stain.

You will enjoy the results.
