Hooray For Western Medicine

I have been quiet this summer. Barely blogging 2-3 times per month.

The reasons are two-fold:

1. I am stuck in an awful and all-encompassing lawsuit, against one of the most evil corporations on the planet–CitiMortgage, Inc.

2. I am dealing with some health issues, that have happened due to the stress from 1 above, and from bad eating. I may know what to do, but sometimes I have trouble doing it. I am an emotional eater, and that may be my downfall eventually (but not today, thank goodness!)

Today I am exuberant, for two reasons also! The first is that it is a summer Saturday, and I am with my family, and the second is that I am finally healing from my two main health problems (again two!!), which are lower back pain, and a blocked right ear.

The title of this post comes from the fact that modern medicine, western medicine is what has really gotten me over the hump. I am grateful to the two (oy vey!) Chinese doctors that treated me over the past few weeks, with acupuncture, blood-letting, electrical stimulation, and massage. I am also grateful to the chiropractor, who did her best, with adjustments, stretching, and ice. I also thank my eating guru, whose advice will clearly help me in many ways.

These experts said I had problems with my liver, my heart, my kidney, my upper back, a slipped disc in my lower back, and a virus. But none (alone) solved the problem.

Who did? The fix came from: (you guessed it, two sources)

1. the Metrowest Medical Center E.R., where they spent two hours softening and digging out wax from my right ear, ending the pain, pressure, loss of hearing, and most of the ringing.

2. Sports & Physical Therapy Associates, where they realized I had a muscle strain and helped me reduce the swelling, while I gradually improve my flexibility and core strength.

So hooray for Western Medicine, and thanks to Angela and the people at Framingham’s great hospital, and Ashley and her PT people. Thanks especially to my wife Carol for cooking for me, doing ginger compresses, rubbing my feet, putting up with my complaining, and giving me the idea of going to PT and the ER.

So now the only question is whether I will blog more often. If nobody comments or calls me, I may not, as I literally don’t know if anyone is reading this. But if people get something out of it, I would be glad to–and I enjoy it.

Have a great summer, and for goodness sakes, be careful what you eat, in bending over, and keep your ears free of wax, particularly if you wear ear plugs for hearing protection.

Marking Time As Father To My Daughter

jjsweet

Every six months or so, I get to take my lovely daughter out for a meal, just the two of us.

My job is not to bring up stressful items, to not make a scene, to not offend her by ordering animal foods, and to agree to view any video or hear any song she chooses. Not too painful.

Stephen Anthony’s is a popular brunch spot on a Sunday. The service is painfully slow. Very young greeters and very old table-clearers are bailed out by the passable waitresses and decent food, if uninspired.

We did have a great view of the pond, on a beautiful day, after a great holiday night out at the fireworks.

I got the oatmeal, which was nice. The raisins and a bit of syrup perked it up. Also got some wheat toast, and I put my favorite, strawberry jam on it. Yum. Finished with a cup of decaf. I have grown a lot in her 16.5 years. I’m more flexible now.

She got a mushroom omelet, and a fruit cup. We shared a bit. We spoke a little, and I felt a connection to my 16.5 year-old that I generally feel slipping due to her coming into her own career and relationships. A more complicated life is coming, but she seems to be navigating it fantastically. I do spend about an hour a day praying and chanting for her safety etc. Now that she has her driving permit, maybe two hours would be warranted.

Anyway, it was a nice time, and she even stopped to photograph the horses and cows on the way home. I’m a lucky dad.

Eating out a lot lately?

Meaning to get outside, but waiting for the end of school or the beginning of summer?

IT”S ON!

Here’s a yummy morning drink that will help relax and detoxify your body this morning.

Greens Tea

Take 1/2 stalk of fresh organic kale or collard green, chop and boil in spring water for three minutes. Add a squeeze of fresh lemon and drink hot.

Follow it up with a nice walk in the woods or lie down in a meadow and look up at the wondrous sky.

You are now in a healing zone!

Summer Breeze, Without The Sneeze

Woman-sneezing-with-tissue-in-meadow-779344Okay, we are done with grass  (last week) and Oak pollen (last month), at least in Massachusetts.

Now comes many other villains, not the least of which are bugs and construction. PLEASE do not complain about the heat—winter is much worse. If you disagree, then move to Maine or VT.

I hope you can enjoy the summer breeze, without the sneeze.

Here are ten ways to avoid sneezing, sniffling, coughing, itchy eyes and throat, and hives etc.

  1. Avoid dairy foods, especially non-organic, and especially when mixed with sugar
  2. Avoid pesticides in your food (especially greens, fruit & meat/dairy) and on your lawn
  3. Avoid chemicals: diesel fumes, perfumes, hair dye, nail polish, and harsh cleansers
  4. Avoid GMO foods such as Corn, Soy, Wheat etc.
  5. Have a pickle (real pickles from Whole Foods or your own kitchen please) after meals
  6. Clean your AC filter; filter drinking and bathing water, and clean your home often
  7. Wear a dust mask when cleaning etc. and avoid hairy and dirty cats, dogs, etc.
  8. Instead of allergy medicine, have miso soup 2x per week and use a netty pot or breath steam from the dishwasher or shower
  9. Hold your breath briefly when you encounter fumes
  10. Limit chlorine from pools etc.

Healing Power Of The Earth In The Early Morning

Today I woke up at 5:40am, and decided to do what was right for my body.

With nowhere to be on a Saturday am, and a warm dew-covered law welcoming me, I walked outside barefooted, then lie down on the grass for a few minutes, just enjoying the blue sky and cool breeze. Wonderful.

Then I put on my sneakers and took a walk into the woods. Quiet reflection and a feeling that today would be a natural and a relaxing day.

Of course I’m back in the house writing my blog, but after this I’m going to do some sit-ups, then straighten up the kitchen and make a nice healthy breakfast.

Have a great day!

Who is this amazing woman that is single-handedly changing companies such as Frito-Lay, Chipotle, Panera, McDonald’s and Kraft?

My Earth Day Wish

Happy Earth Day 2015!

EARTH-DAY-700x386

Here’s my wish for Earth Day:

I wish all the people in the United States, were healthy, happy and enlightened enough to see that our planet has many wonderful, unique gifts that are ours for the borrowing, but that we must support her, and not take advantage because of greed and competition.

Let us not have to fight about legislation against oil pipelines, fracking, labeling of organic foods, supporting the meat and dairy farmers, and fishing limits and methods. Let us all question ourselves, and hold ourselves accountable for being the custodians of the planet and every living thing.

Have a great day!

Health Secret! Spring Cleaning In Your Colon

carrot daikon

Over the long winter, some of us ate more and exercised less. If that also included cheese, meat and chemicals, you might be looking forward to losing a few pounds.

Eating less, enjoying fresh vegetarian fare, and of course getting more exercise will help, but here is a recipe you will also enjoy…

Carrot-Daikon Drink

  • 1 medium carrot
  • same amount of daikon (thin variety preferred)
  • 1 scallion
  • 1 tablespoon shoyu or tamari
  • 1/2 cup water

Grate the carrot and daikon (works best on a ginger grater), and rinse the grater with a small amount of water to get all of it. Chop the scallion. Add a small amount of water to a pot and bring to a boil. Add carrot and daikon, and simmer for two minutes. Add scallion and simmer two more minutes. Add shoyu and simmer one more minute. Eat and drink hot.

Spring Cleaning In Your Colon!

It might stink up the house just a bit, but it’s worth it! Delicious and great for your insides. Try it out!

Happy Spring, Easter and Passover!!

Tonight my family gets together at our seder to tell and teach the story of the exodus of many Jews from Egypt. Lots of fun, eating and drinking, indoctrinating the next generation of Jewish children.

But the food is just awful for you! Gefilte Fish, sweet red wine, matzoh which binds you up, and then for good measure, more matzoh in the soup, and desserts. I am dreaming that maybe tonight I can abstain from all the food and drink, as I have been eating like a madman due to the stress of life.

I will let you know how I did in my next post. But only if you reply to this one, so I know you are reading.

Thanks, David
